Messi is up for this -- another burst into the box draws Neuer out and though the striker pokes the ball past the goalkeeper, Boateng hacks away from the line as Higuain followed in.

A fine move from Germany as Muller finds Ozil, who spins and tees up Kroos but his effort is tame and right at Romero. Now Muller crosses and Klose is a whisker away from making contact. German pressure building.

Ahead of the game, there was plenty on the streets of Rio to keep football fans entertained.

GERMANY 0-0 ARGENTINA What has gone on there? A Germany corner finds Howedes unmarked -- his header slams against the post before Romero claims, but the ball had gone out from Schweinsteiger's delivery. And that is the break. What a mesmerizing half of football.
What did YOU make of that first half? Who do you see as the likely winner? You can vote in the poll above, send us a comment or use social media on #CNNWorldCup. We'd love to hear from you so get tweeting/commenting/voting.
A really bright start to the half from Argentina and Lionel Messi should have given them the lead. Biglia played a splendid throughball to Messi, who strode into the penalty area before sweeping a low effort narrowly wide of Manuel Neuer's goal.
We're into the final few minutes of normal time, both teams seem resigned to extra time and another 30 minutes of play.
Spain won it in extra time in 2010, who will lift the trophy in 2014?

Mario Gotze is straight into the action, gaining possession in midfield and charging forward. His shot on the bounce was scuffed, though, and Romero saved with ease.

Germany had the better of the first half, Argentina largely dominated the second. This is a tough one to call, although the Germans will benefit from not playing extra time in their semifinal. Will Argentine legs get heavy over the next 30 minutes?
It isn't just the players that have been subjected to strong tackles on the field. Here's how the stewards dealt with a pitch invader in the second half. (Christophe Simon/AFP/Getty)

So, the extra half an hour begins. I think we can all be agreed we'd rather settle this in normal time than from the penalty spot. And Germany are right on the attack as Schurrle stings the palms of Romero -- then Argentina break and Boateng tackles Aguero superbly. Hang onto your hats, this could get frantic.
The game has settled down again after that flurry of action. There must be some tired legs out there, which can often lead to mistakes. You don't want to be the man to offer the World Cup final on a plate to the opposition, believe me.

Oh Palacio! Another GLORIOUS chance for Argentina to go into the lead after Hummels misjudges a long ball and Palacio is in. He tries to lift the ball over the advancing Neuer, and succeeds, but can only chase the ball as it drops wide of the post.

Fair to say Palacio's rat's tail hairdo is attracting a lot of interest on social media. Not all of it positive, it has to be said.
